Brooklyn Heights Greek Revival
This Greek Revival rowhouse underwent a comprehensive restoration and expansion that balanced preservation with substantial new construction. The brownstone façade was repaired and refinished, original window assemblies were restored, and the stoop was rebuilt to match its historic profile. Inside, the project required a full interior renovation while carefully preserving the original winding staircase, a defining feature of the nineteenth century structure. Vertical and horizontal additions were introduced to expand the home’s footprint while maintaining the integrity of the historic fabric.
The new extension accommodates a transitional kitchen that blends Greek Revival references with a clean, contemporary interior language. The plan is organized around natural light, introduced through a sunlit room that anchors the space and establishes a warm, open atmosphere. Rattan caning in the upper cabinets adds subtle texture and a quiet historical nod without compromising the modern clarity of the design. A restrained palette of materials and coordinated proportions helps maintain a legible, cohesive architectural expression.
A skylight integrated into the extension transitions into a façade window, bringing daylight deep into the kitchen and creating a soft wash of light over the breakfast nook. Throughout the project, the integration of new work with the historic structure is guided by clear detailing, disciplined proportions, and a consistent respect for the home’s original character. completed home honors its Greek Revival heritage while providing a functional and contemporary environment suited to modern living.
